The Bodega Coat of Arms (Study), Paint, ink and graphite on paper, 62"x36"

Tootsie Roll, mixed media, 14"x9"

Ronny Quevedo

Currency, food stamps, candy wrappers, type, elementary grammar books, toy figures, art history books, posters, and bodega signs are the sources of my visual literacy. Cultural assimilation and dilemma drive my work to explore all aspects of graphic communication. My inclination to two-dimensional work is its correlation to symbolism and language through mass production.

My work revolves around a visual literacy based on popular images and symbols that influence identity, power and value. Since, so much printed matter affects the way we acquire this literacy and its entailing social effects, my work tests these standards of visual reading and their connotations. Language and art history have a lot to do with these values and am invested in making work that reveal these readings.
